The Lamsam family tree

The Lamsam family is a Thai family of Chinese descent. Notable as the founders of Kasikornbank, the extended family owns businesses in the banking and insurance industries. The family’s current head isBanthoon Lamsam

The Lamsam family traces its roots to Ung Miao Ngian (of the Ng (伍) clan), a Hakka immigrant from Guangdong who moved to Thailand (then known as Siam). His third son, Ung Yuk Long, inherited the business and led the family’s most dominant branch. Yuk Long had three wives, with six sons and six daughters. His second wife Thongyu, a daughter of the Wanglee family, was the mother of the three of his sons — Choti, Chulin and Kasem Lamsam — who would establish Kasikornbank and three insurance companies, Phatra Insurance, Muang Thai Insurance and Muang Thai Life Assurance.

• Krisada Lamsam, president of Kasikornbank, Krisada resigned after more than 25 years with the bank to set up Meister Technik, the Thai importer and distributor for Audi. The master’s degree holder from Oregon State University is also managing director of Pruetthada and Lamsam Estate companies. The son of Pairote, he and his wife dentist and TV personality Dr Pauline have a son and triplet daughters. (atler)

His third son, Ung Yuk Long, and fifth son, Ung Tung Pak (1902–1961), notably expanded their fatherʼs business. Ung Yuk Long also exported teakwood as well as milled rice. In the 1930s, Chote Lamsam (1901–1948), who was the eldest son of Ung Yuk Long, and his younger brother, Chulin Lamsam (1904–1965), extended their business lines to insurance. Furthermore, in 1944, they established the Thai Farmers Bank Ltd., known today as Kasikornbank. Chote and Chulin were sons of Yuk Long, whose mother was a daughter of the Wang Lee family.
