What is EntiTree?
EntiTree is an effort started on mid-2020 and merged Wikidata visualization tools in family tree forms, with added features that make the entire experience more user friendly and navigatable.
Who benefits from using it?
EntiTree strives to support
- researchers to investigate Wikidata connections in a visually appealing format
- scientists that are intent on exploring interactive taxonomy tree
- historians studying royal families
- students that are keen on enrichening their horizon
- foreign language speaking folks from all around the globe, thanks to the multilingual feature aspect
- Wikidata editors and contributors, vastly interested in spotting missing or duplicate links.
How to use this Platform?
- Start by selecting the person or character you want to extend on. Once selected, focus if you want to extend the ancestors or descendants. For example, if you want to study or research on Joe Biden’s ancestry, pick his grandfather or grandmother to look into siblings and their children's as well.
- For certain family trees, there might be some missing data. In this instance, you have to check if the person’s data is already in Wikidata. If it’s still missing, create a missing person and add the required info. The steps that entail for this include:
- create a new item
- set instance of: depending on the context, is it a ‘human’, ‘animated character’ or ‘horse.’
- set gender: male or female
- set birth date
- set death date
- set description if you want
- try to add references if you can, usually using a“reference URL.”
- go the both parent’s Wikidata site (mother AND father) and add children (using the ID from the newly created item)
- add spouses and children's if any (and any other relevant info)
3. Add the necessary details, such as missing image. You can click on the label, and then “add missing images” but alternatively head on over here: https://images.dataprick.com/ and add the missing images. Insert the link of the image or manually insert it in. The platform will automatically crop the person’s face or head. Always provide the link of the site of the image when uploading manually. And ideally, insert the image of only the person. If there are multiple people in the picture, crop it accordingly.
4. Select the right theme. Use the vertical theme if there are many children's or extensions.
5. Expand all the nodes and extend the family as wide as possible.
Voila! You are done.
